TESOL：Discipline or Fearness?来源：TESOL网址：http://www.tefltesol.com.cn Discipline is very essential to provide the teacher and student with a good learning environment.I live in China, and in Chinese awareness, to be strick is the main key ofbeing a good teacher. Many teachers are obsessed with physical punishment. WhenI was young, I was fear of every teacher. Only a few of them were kind an d friendly. The rest of them were nightmares. After all, offering fearness toothers is the most effective way to let them obey. However, a teacher is not ageneral, and the students are not soilders. The classroom is not a military base. After all these years, I thought this kind of teacher would disappear with more and more people are aware of being too strict will cause lots of damages to children. Unfortunately, I know many of them are over strict to students.
From my perspective, there will always be a better way to solve a problem. And being too critical to students is not the best way to draw student’s attention. I sawa teacher was yelling at two students only because those two students wererunning in the hall, which is a forbidden behavior. Those two students were crying so hard. Since then, I never see those two students running in the hall,also less smiling. The damage has been planted into student’s mind, it is caused already, and it will be much hard to remove the hurt. I understand why the teacher was acting so angry to them, but I do not agree with that. Since then, I keep asking myself, if a student in my class gets distracted, is thatthe student’s misbehavior, or mine? Then I will try to find out the reason.Sometimes, it is only because the student lacks of sleep, so they feel sleep inthe evening. Sometimes, it is because some parts of my class is not attractiveenough to those students, which is not their fault. I know some teachers wouldbe angry and keep reminding students to pay attention during the class. In myopinion, the behavior of yelling at students reflects that a teacher is lackingability of managing a class. So I will try mybest to make my class more attractive to avoid this happens. I hope this couldbe a common aggrement for each Chinese teacher in the future.
